A Rant About Crysis 2

You lookin' at me?

The question of whether gamers will like Crysis 2 hinges on two qualifying factors–whether they like first-person shooters in general and whether they like Half-Life, Halo, Resistance, Gears of War, The Chronicles of Riddick, Bioshock, and the myriad of other competent sci-fi actioners that saturate the genre.

If you answered yes to both, then it’s safe to say Crysis 2 will more likely than not suit your preference. I make this assertion not to belittle what Crytek has done, which is something fascinating and, more importantly, just plain fun, but midway (maybe even earlier than that), gamers who’ve played the aforementioned group of sci-fi behemoths will undoubtably experience a recurring case of deja vu. Ordinarily, it can’t be helped. It’s the nature of the beast when a genre has seemingly run its course and everything just seems to be more of the same.

But if imitation is sincerely the sincerest form of flattery, then Crytek should be flattered that they have succeeded in at least crafting a superb, well-balanced, thrilling, and beautiful game in a bloated genre. Read more…
